Intro

If you liked the last two groove sessions, you’re going to love this one! My cousin's wedding is coming up. So, I have decided to cover some Bollywood classics that may be heard during the wedding weekend. Since I didn’t have time to practice a dance for his wedding coming up, I decided why not make up for it by creating a post for the eventual married couple. Congrats Hiren and Krishna! In Midwest Dhamaka: The UNC Takeover I briefly mentioned that I had been listening to slowed-down versions of Bollywood songs. Now, I will talk about those songs in greater detail and talk about other slowed Bollywood songs as well. So, what are slow and reverbed songs? These are popular songs whose speeds have been slowed down and amplified using music production software. I believe slowed-down versions of songs offer a compelling experience for listeners when hearing their favorite songs. The aura and atmosphere created by these songs are very soothing and relaxing for the ears. Additionally, if you’ve listened to these songs without knowing their meaning don’t worry, I got you covered, as I didn’t know the full meaning of these songs until I researched them. Now, let’s press play and get into this groove session!

Tum Hi Ho

A few months ago, I saw Aashiqui 2 for the first time. I liked the movie and that’s also where my love for this song started, for better or worse. In the context of the movie, Tum Hi Ho is about Rahul who can’t live without his love, Arohi. She’s the individual who is keeping him from spiraling. It’s almost as if Rahul feels only sadness/pain and being without her would make him feel incomplete, considering he only feels at peace around her. Tum Hi Ho in my opinion would be considered a sad song because if her love isn’t strong enough to keep him “here” then it's rather tragic for the two lovers. She’d eventually be alone without him. The slowed-down version really makes you feel his pain/emotion more. On a positive note, if you’re married or if you have found the “one” then Tum Hi Ho is the emotional romantic song for you. If you’re looking for something less sad in context, then look no further than the next song on this list.

Chaleya

Does the term “instant classic” exist? I don’t know, to be honest. However, if there is a Bollywood song deserving of that title, it’s Chaleya. Chaleya is the hit song from the movie Jawan, which is another movie I recently saw a few months ago, that I’d highly recommend. What is Chaleya about? It is about someone who has fallen in love with you, and they’ve decided you’re the one. You have complete control over this person as if they’ve reached cloud 9. You’ve now become one with this person. This person feels so honored to be with you, they’ve lost who they previously were, for better or worse. However, I interpret this on the positive side, and that it's for the better. The slowed-down version captures the essence of your heart and emotions a little while longer.

Guzarish

I have vague memories of my parents watching Ghajini, the movie this song is from. I don’t have fond memories of what I saw in this film. Most notably, due to the tragic nature of this film, like Aashiqui 2. However, on a positive note, a snippet of Guzarish is in UNC Chalkaa’s mix, which is fire, so shoutout to them! But anyway, what is Guzarish about? Similarly, to Chaleya this person believes her love completes him and he wants her to get closer. However, this may come at a high price. This person fears an incoming “storm,” he doesn’t know what’ll happen, but he still prays the “flame” stays lit, and that she’ll be with him. The slowed-down version makes those flames last an eternity.

Main Yahaan Hoon

What is my favorite Bollywood film? The answer is Veer-Zaara. The story is amazing as well as the acting of both Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta. I should probably rewatch this film right now, to be honest. Main Yahaan Hoon is a standout song from the movie. The music video for this song is also great. What is Main Yahaan Hoon about? This is actually the first song I already knew the answer to before researching. Simply, it’s a call to your lover that you’re here, and it’s not necessarily that you’re physically here. You’re in their thoughts, and dreams, you’re everywhere without even being there. So, you're living “rent-free” in their head. He/she just can’t stop thinking about you.

Yeh Hum Aa Gaye Hain Kahaan

So, you are probably thinking I’m going to continue my streak of talking about one song per movie, or one song per artist in these groove sessions. Nope. The strike is broken now since this is another song from Veer Zaara. Ye Hum Aa Gaye Hain Kahoon is probably my favorite Bollywood song. When I was researching this song, I found out it had been cut from the movie. The soundtrack is where I actually found this gem. So, what is Ye Hum Aa Gaye Hain Kahoon about? The song title translates to “Where Have We Both Come.” The two lovers know their story is being told in nature. They’re also enjoying their time together in nature. Based on the music video, the title is likely a nod to where they keep ending up on their journey together. The song's ending also implies someone, or something out there, is taking care of them.

Closing

I hope you enjoyed this groove session! I’m glad I could share with you my favorite slowed Bollywood songs. I believe these versions offer a unique perspective for the listener. I hope this blog post convinced you to explore more slowed-down versions of your favorite songs. Additionally, I recommend checking out the great Bollywood movies these songs come from.
